Biochar in the urban environment
Several scientific articles published in recent years show soil fertility and quality are improved with the addition of biochar. Biochar is initially sterile and therefore has no indigenous populations of microorganisms. Instead, the physical structure of the biochar encourages colonisation by various arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi, bacteria and nematodes. Biochar adsorbs humic acid, which is used as sustenance by soil microbes, and humic acid adsorbs fertilizers and preventing them from leaching out of the soil. It has exceptional structural properties, high porosity, and is not degradable. So, biochar has the potential to be used in combination with other biologicals to increase soil efficacy.
